Style 101: Introduction Part I

This series was inspired by my friend A. who upon seeing a photo of a rather awkward teenage Melina said “This gives me hope that I can one day possess awesome style. How did you go from that to how you look now?”
Me, high school
I can't believe there was a time before I had bangs!
While I’ve always had a quirky and loud sense of style, I haven’t always expressed it so gracefully.  If I had to summarize it in 2 words: courage and explorationSince I have more than 2 words, though, let me expand upon that.

I was voted most unique senior year. I still rock overalls like nobody's business.
I was no Tavi Gevinson growing up, but I did experiment a lot with fashion and makeup in my teens (and beyond). Looking back, sometimes I looked outright ridiculous but at least I was taking chances; that’s courage. Because I come from a fashion-conscious family (even my dad is quite dapper, must say), I’ve sorta been nurtured from birth to care about clothes. I’ve also loved art/art history since childhood and studied or observed artists and material culture from around the world pretty much my whole life. I’ve always maintained a strong sense of curiosity, visually and otherwise; that’s exploration. But, as I’ve established, my style and sense of  self were underdeveloped during my teen years. So, how did I go from that to this?

  3. Dat's my gurl! I remember that overall dress so well, with the cartoon figures drawn on the bottom hem. I have always thought you had such great style with the MOST unique things (that's not a back-handed compliment when it comes from me), but looking back over your evolution, yes, I see how much you have matured and developed a really elegant style. Can't wait to see some old pictures!!!

  4. I am very excited to learn the answer to your question, "how did I go from that to this?"
Also, "material culture." That's a nice way to talk about how we interact with all the man made or man appropriated objects in our lives. It reminds me of how long we have been using objects to express ourselves.
Now I am thinking of you as a historian of material culture, which may help to explain your timeless fashion.

    Can't wait to see more!

  6. "material culture" is actually an academic/historical term FYI, but it is a good one. As a historic preservationist, I am literally a historian of material culture.
